Jimmy Mans: Amotopoan Trails : A Recent Archaeology of Trio Movements

Amotopoan Trails : A Recent Archaeology of Trio Movements

Description

In this book the concept of mobility is explored for the archaeology of the Amazonian and Caribbean region. As a result of technological and methodological progress in archaeology, mobility has become increasingly visible on the level of the individual. However, as a concept it does not seem to fit with current approaches in Amazonian archaeology, which favour a move away from viewing small mobile groups as models for the deeper past. Instead of ignoring such ethnographic tyrannies, in this book they are considered to be essential for arriving at a different past. Viewing archaeological mobility as the sum of movements of both people and objects, the empirical part of Amotopoan Trails focuses on Amotopo, a small contemporary Trio village in the interior of Suriname. The movements of the Amotopoans are tracked and positioned in a century of Trio dynamics, ultimately yielding a recent archaeology of Surinamese-Trio movements for the Sipaliwini River basin (1907-2008). Alongside the construction of this archaeology, novel mobility concepts are introduced. They provide the conceptual footholds which enable the envisioning of mobility at various temporal scales, from a decade up to a century, the sequence of which has remained a blind spot in Caribbean and Amazonian archaeology.

There is a vast luminous consciousness already within us, but it is obscured by the clouds of our incessant thoughts. With sincerity, moral integrity, and inner vigilance, which, when embodied, implies that we have internalized the basic tenets of the law of attention, we can move beyond the promptings of our lower nature and break through the clouds of our ordinary mind to realize our own divine nature. Emphasizing inner attention and an awareness of attitude, Michael's practices can help aspirants make direct contact with the divine source each of us unknowingly carries deep within. "Unabashed, unbiased, and disturbingly honest, leaving no razor-sharp arrowhead unturned, no rifle trigger unpulled....a compelling and fiery narrative" ("USA TODAY"), this is the definitive chronicle of the conflict Amotopoan Trails : A Recent Archaeology of Trio Movements download book between an expanding white civilization and the Plains Indians who stood in its way.

It has no concept of classes, and you don't even need to define any objects in order to write code. But don't be fooled--JavaScript is an incredibly powerful and expressive object-oriented language that puts many design decisions right into your hands. Pete Jordan: In the City of Bikes: The Story of the Amsterdam Cyclist

In the City of Bikes: The Story of the Amsterdam Cyclist

Description

Part personal memoir, part history of cycling, part fascinating street-level tour of Amsterdam, "In the City of Bikes" is the story of a man who loves bikes in a city that loves bikes. When Pete's story begins, his goals for an upcoming semester abroad are clear: study how to make America's cities more bicycle friendly, and then return home to his new bride, Amy Joy. Once he sets foot in Amsterdam, however, Pete falls immediately in love with the city that already lives life on two wheels-and suddenly, he can't imagine ever leaving it. Just two weeks into their marriage, Amy Joy joins Pete in Amsterdam, but hardships quickly loom in their adopted homeland. As they skip from one illegal sublet to the next, success and stability are constantly out of reach, and work is impossible to find-but they do discover deep pleasures during their daily rides through the city. And as Pete digs deep into the cycling history of Amsterdam, Amy Joy, prompted by a fortuitous flat, finds her own new calling as a bicycle mechanic. Pete, meanwhile, discovers an untold history of cycling in Amsterdam, an activity so ingrained in the city's lifestyle that its story hasn't been properly told. From its beginnings as an elitist pastime in the 1890s, to the street-consuming craze of the 1920s, from the bicycle's role in a city-wide resistance to the Nazi occupation, to the legendary success of the White Bikes in the 1970s, a movement that never in fact succeeded, to the bike fisherman of today, Jordan painstakingly recreates the evolution of cycling over time, through fads, alongside great movements in history. As his love grows for his adopted city, the fates seem to align, inviting him to stay. Amy Joy takes up an apprenticeship with an aging bicycle mechanic who offers them a vacant apartment right above his shop. It's just in time too, as their first child is on the way. Then, even more incredibly, the mechanic retires-leaving the shop to Amy Joy. They'll be staying in Amsterdam, and Pete will have a city to share with his son.

A World of My Own: The First Ever Non-stop Solo Round the World Voyage

Description

On Friday 14 June 1968 Suhaili, a tiny ketch, slipped almost unnoticed out of Falmouth harbour steered by the solitary figure at her helm, Robin Knox-Johnston. Ten and a half months later Suhaili, paintwork peeling and rust streaked, her once white sails weathered and brown, her self-steering gone, her tiller arm jury rigged to the rudder head, came romping joyously back to Falmouth to a fantastic reception for Robin, who had become the first man to sail round the world non-stop single-handed. By every standard it was an incredible adventure, perhaps the last great uncomputerised journey left to man. Every hazard, every temptation to abandon the astounding voyage came Robin's way, from polluted water tanks, smashed cabin top and collapsed boom to lost self-steering gear and sheered off tiller, and all before the tiny ketch had fought her way to Cape Horn, the point of no return, the fearsome test of any seaman's nerve and determination. A World of My Own is Robin's gripping, uninhibited, moving account of one of the greatest sea adventures of our time. An instant bestseller, it is now reissued for a new generation of readers to be enthralled and inspired.

Heartwood of the Bodhi Tree: The Buddha's Teachings on Voidness

Description

Clear and simple teachings on voidness and living an ethical life. In "Heartwood of the Bodhi Tree," Buddhadasa Bhikkhu presents in simple language the philosophy of voidness, or sunnata, that lies at the heart of the Buddhism. By carefully tying voidness to ethical discipline, Buddhadasa provides us clear and open grounds to reflect on the place of the philosophy in our lives. With his ecumenical, stimulating, and enthusiastically engaged approach to reading the Buddha's teaching in full flourish, Ajahn Buddhadasa transforms the jungle of philosophy into a glade as inviting as the one in which he famously taught.

In Algeria in the 1930s, a cat belonging to a widowed rabbi and his beautiful daughter, Zlabya, eats the family parrot and gains the ability to speak. To his master s consternation, the cat immediately begins to tell lies (the first being that he didn t eat the parrot). The rabbi vows to educate him in the ways of the Torah, while the cat insists on studying the kabbalah and having a Bar Mitzvah. They consult the rabbi s rabbi, who maintains that a cat can t be Jewish but the cat, as always, knows better. Leila Sebbar's novel recounts an event in French history that has been hidden for many years. Toward the end of the Algerian war, the FLN, an Algerian nationalist party, Heartwood of the Bodhi Tree: The Buddha's Teachings on Voidness download book organized a demonstration in Paris to oppose a curfew imposed upon Algerians in France. About 30,000 Algerians gathered peacefully, but the protest was brutally suppressed by the Paris police. Between 50 and 200 Algerians were killed and their bodies were thrown into the Seine. This incident provides the background for a more intimate look into the history of violence between France and Algeria. Following three young protagonists-one French, one Algerian, and one French national of Algerian descent-Sebbar takes readers on a journey of discovery and comprehension. Mildred Mortimer's impressive translation conveys the power of Sebbar's words in English and allows English-speaking readers an opportunity to understand the complex relationship between past and present, metropole and colony, immigrant and citizen, that lies at the heart of this acclaimed novel.

Virgil,Robert Fagles,Bernard M. W. Knox: The Aeneid

The Aeneid

Description

Robert Fagles's award-winning translations of Homer's twin works The Iliad and The Odyssey have sold more than a million copies and become classics in their own right. With this stunning modern verse translation, Fagles introduces Virgil's Aeneid to a whole new generation of readers and completes the classic triptych at the heart of Western civilisation. The Aeneid tells the story of an epic voyage in which Aeneas crosses stormy seas, becomes entangled in a tragic love affair with Dido of Cathage, descends to the world of the dead - all the way tormented by the vengeful Juno, Queen of the Gods - and finally reaches Italy, where he will fulfil his destiny: to found the Roman people. A stirring tale of arms and heroism, dispossession and defeat, and an unsparing portrait of a man caught between love, duty, and fate, The Aeneid brings to life a whole world of human passion, nobility, and courage. Fagles's new translation retains all of the gravitas and humanity of the original as well as its powerful blend of poetry and myth. Featuring an illuminating introduction to Virgil's world from noted scholar Bernard Knox, this new Aeneid lends a vibrant, contemporary voice to the literary achievement of the ancient world.

Any golfer, regardless of ability, who has the opportunity to listen and work with Jim will benefit and improve." - Peter Jacobsen, Champions Tour player and winner of seven PGA Tour championships.Voted one of "America's 50 Greatest Teachers" by "Golf Digest" and ranked among the "Top 100 Teachers" list by "Golf" magazine, Jim Hardy has been fixing the swings of professional and amateur golfers since 1977. Jim Cramer's Getting Back to Even

Description

Jim Cramer, host of CNBC's "Mad Money" and bestselling author and financial guru, offers specific advice about how to overcome your fear of the markets and put your investments back on track to recover from the financial debacle of 2008-2009. You don't even look at your 401(k) statements any longer. When mail comes from your broker or your mutual fund, you throw it in a drawer unopened. You know how bad things are and you're just waiting for them to improve before you start thinking about your money again. But how long will that take? How many opportunities will you miss while you hide your head in the sand? Shouldn't you be doing "something?" Jim Cramer says that there are positive steps you can take to start the financial healing process. You can start to get back to even, then go from there. Cramer explains how to make the best of the bad situation you're in, and how not to succumb to fear and panic. He tell you what steps to take depending on your age and your financial goals. "Getting Back to Even "will include advice on refinancing a mortgage, recovering from job loss or downsizing, and making a new financial plan. It will include twenty new rules for investing that fit the current economic climate. Jim Cramer believes that the stock market is still the best long-term investment anyone can make. He'll offer guidance on which stocks to select, or how to find a reliable and successful mutual-fund manager, and how to spot the economic recovery when it happens. Whether you're 25 and investing to build wealth or 65 and hoping to restore your retirement savings, you'll need the advice Jim Cramer offers in "Getting Back to Even."

Helping the Client: A Creative Practical Guide

Description

'Those who claim to have counselling among their skills should read this book and reflect on their own practice. This would in itself be a growth experience for many' - British Journal of Psychiatry 'The author rewards one with a wealth of interventions which are, as the subtitle suggests, very creative but also very practical' - Nursing Times Helping the Client is the bestselling text which has long been used as the basis of interpersonal skills training in a wide range of professions from medicine to management. Based on John Heron's well-known six category model, the book presents different forms of helping behaviour which can be adopted by any practitioner working face-to-face with a client. Drawing on his many years of experience as a therapist, consultant and teacher, the author explores the contexts and issues associated with these different forms of helping and, for each, describes a wide range of practical interventions for the practitioner to use. He examines the objectives of helping, states of personhood, the many ways in which helping can degenerate, the preparation and training of the practitioner, and examples of how the interventions can be used by different occupational groups. Helping the Client is the Fifth Edition of the book originally entitled Six Category Intervention Analysis. Revised and enlarged throughout, with a new chapter on co-working, the book remains essential reading for the development of interpersonal skills, in counselling, management, health care, social work, youth and community work, education, and many other professions.

Mister Pip

Description

'You cannot pretend to read a book. Your eyes will give you away. So will your breathing. A person entranced by a book simply forgets to breathe. The house can catch alight and a reader deep in a book will not look up until the wallpaper is in flames.' Bougainville. 1991. A small village on a lush tropical island in the South Pacific. Eighty-six days have passed since Matilda's last day of school as, quietly, war is encroaching from the other end of the island. When the villagers' safe, predictable lives come to a halt, Bougainville's children are surprised to find the island's only white man, a recluse, re-opening the school. Pop Eye, aka Mr Watts, explains he will introduce the children to Mr Dickens. Matilda and the others think a foreigner is coming to the island and prepare a list of much needed items. They are shocked to discover their acquaintance with Mr Dickens will be through Mr Watts' inspiring reading of Great Expectations. But on an island at war, the power of fiction has dangerous consequences. Imagination and beliefs are challenged by guns. Mister Pip is an unforgettable tale of survival by story; a dazzling piece of writing that lives long in the mind after the last page is finished.

The Expectant Dad's Handbook: All You Need to Know About Pregnancy, Birth and Beyond

Description

Becoming a dad can be a daunting time - especially when most pregnancy and parenting information is targeted towards women. This exciting new book, from a leading expert in working with expectant dads, doesn't sideline or speak down to men. Instead it provides an array of targeted information to fully prepare men for their new roles - as both birth partners and fathers. The Expectant Dad's Handbook is a one-stop guide for men on their path to fatherhood. It provides practical answers to all the questions on the mind of a dad-to-be - from what to expect at each stage of pregnancy to how to cope with any worries and fears about becoming a dad. It also reveals unique insights into a dad's role during labour, showing key strategies for improving the birth. Both practical and accessible, this guide will provide all the information and advice fathers need for the journey ahead.

Two women and three men, displaced in different ways by the rapid transformation of Victorian England, travel separately to a small settlement on Australia's western rim. With them they carry social ambitions and psychological wounds. As their lives intersect in the Swan River Colony, what they encounter is not quite what they expect. Who will struggle, who will thrive, and how will each react when secrets emerge? Though fictional, The Mind's Own Place is partly based on the actual experiences of historical figures: a pair of convicts from respectable backgrounds, talented and enterprising but troubled; two female immigrants, free settlers, not equally fortunate or resilient; and the first detective in Western Australia, who eventually uncovers more than he intends. Like Ian Reid's previous acclaimed novels, this powerful story explores intricate relationships between the shaping of character The Expectant Dad's Handbook: All You Need to Know About Pregnancy, Birth and Beyond download PDF and the pressure of adversity. It reveals damaged families, mixed motives, and the long shadows thrown by the past.
